Royal Port Alfred Golf Club

Along the silky stretch of white sand shores between Port Elizabeth and East London, two of the Eastern Cape’s largest cities, lies the comparatively quieter town of Port Alfred, and in it, the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club. Also known as the “warm heart” of South Africa’s “Sunshine Coast” Port Alfred lies on either side of the Kowie River as well as bordering the Indian Ocean.

The Club, established officially in 1907, is one of only four golf clubs in South Africa that have been granted the right to use “Royal” as a prefix. This comes as a result of several royal visits to the club between 1921 and 1925. On the sixth of February 1924 King George bestowed the Royal status upon the club after Her Royal Highness Princess Alice’s second visit and Prince Arthur’s high praise of the club.

A true “Links” course, the Royal Port Alfred also offers stunning views of the Indian Ocean, where whales can be spotted from the tees during winter and where you can play amongst the local springbok, impala, guinea fowl and more. As you should expect the 18 hole, 5800m course is meticulously looked after with firm greens and undulating fairways. Come and enjoy the full set of facilities in a true golfing atmosphere at one of South Africa’s must-plays.

Fish River Country Club

Located midway between Port Elizabeth and East London just outside the picturesque town on Port Alfred on South Africa’s sunny East Coast lies the Fish River Country Club.

Occupying a splendid strip of pristine green next to the shimmering blue of the Indian Ocean, the course has some of the best real estate in the Eastern Cape. From any angle this course is absolutely magnificent.

Designed by one of South Africa’s favourite and most successful golfers, Gary Player, this par 72 Parklands format course brings the best out of you as you stroll along its undulating fairways and look over the roughs that are awash in dark green indigenous foliage. The 6.3km’s of course have been designed to challenge and add to the mix the coastal bush and the notorious Old Women’s River, which springs up on you on the 12th, and you have a recipe for wonderful stories and ever-so-slight elaborations.

The Fish River course is an absolute must play for any golfer keen to experience golfing as it should be – away from the crowds and back to the heart of the game. At the Fish River Country Club you will find the full set of facilities and a warm receptive team.
